The Minnetonka Challenge 5 Mile Swim

The Minnetonka Challenge is a flat but scenic (if you can see) 5-mile race from one side of Lake Minnetonka to the other. Held annually since 1987 in July or August, the course runs across the largest section of Lake Minnetonka but is configured so that swimmers should always be within 1/2 mile of shore. The water temperature in late July is typically near 80 degrees F.

Big Shoulders 5K
Chicago, Illinois. Two loops of a triangular course in a protected area of Lake Michigan sound ideal, but it can be wavy and a little cold. Held on the first Sunday after Labor Day each year, over 100 tough competitors take on the 3.1 miles-worth of Lake Michigan currents, turbulence and temperature inversions sans wetsuits, just for the sake of saying they have "big shoulders". A dog has done the race several years and finished mid-pack. Some guy did the whole thing fly last year. It's somewhat inspiring to swim along looking at the tall buildings throughout the race.
