Big Shoulders 5K
Chicago, Illinois. Two loops of a triangular course in a protected area of Lake Michigan sound ideal, but it can be wavy and a little cold. Held on the first Sunday after Labor Day each year, over 100 tough competitors take on the 3.1 miles-worth of Lake Michigan currents, turbulence and temperature inversions sans wetsuits, just for the sake of saying they have "big shoulders". A dog has done the race several years and finished mid-pack. Some guy did the whole thing fly last year. It's somewhat inspiring to swim along looking at the tall buildings throughout the race.
